Bolt Seals for Container Transportation

Shipping freights are steadily on the rise as a low cost form of cargo transportation. With it comes an expected increase in theft and pilfering. In response, shippers are using high security bolt seals to secure such shipments, cargo, and trailer and container latches.

Transportation of goods across border lines requires a high security seal to be affixed to all loaded containment. These high security bolt seals can be applied to truck or trailer doors/ inter modal containers and box car doors. These high security bolt seals are also an ideal choice for truck and trailer security because they are simple to use, an effective theft/tampering deterrent and can be removed with bolt cutters.

iSecurity Seals offers container bolt seals that show evidence of tampering, making it easy to determine if unauthorized access to cargo has occurred. our bolt seals have the following features:

1. Consecutive Numbering: Bolts are numbered to prevent fraud by body or bolt replacement.

2. Once sealed, these high security bolt seals can only be opened by cutting with bolt cutters.

3. Bolt seals make use of a plastic covering to show evidence of tampering.

Supply Chain Security

Numerous points along a supply chain requires a great deal of responsibility whereby transit and transfer occurs.  It is imperative that companies take measures for prevention of theft and tampering.

Having a proper security protocol and measures in place at these important nodes can be an effective guard against tampering and theft.

iSecurity Seals manufactures low-cost security seals that have proven to be ideal for companies looking to implement a tamper-evident program within their organization. Our inventory of plastic and metal tamper evident seals can be easily utilized to secure container loads and are well-equipped to handle all types of weather conditions while in transit.

iSS security seals feature the ability to be customized alphanumerically, with logos, which provides enhanced security that contributes towards meeting compliance standards.

iSS tamper-evident plastic seals enable companies to track packages seamlessly, and quickly, as bar codes can be entered into a database and verified along the supply chain. For added security, each seal can also feature custom text, serial number sequencing, and logos. This allows shipments or lots, to be easily identified, should anyone need to narrow down the search for a specific product or package.

iSS offers high-security cable and bolt seals that are an excellent option for companies looking to meet compliance standards. These seals not only provide tamper evidence, they also provide added security and can be used by manufacturers securing cargo within their warehouses before shipping the items to distributors, and by distributors, logistics, and transportation companies involved in the transit of the goods.

As with most iSS seals, you can select from a wide variety of colors, serial numbering and custom logos, and other enhancements to add extra layers of security and protection.

Choosing the Right Kind of Plastic Security Seal

Choosing the Right Kind of Plastic Security Seal

iSecurity Seals Team

In this article, we will go through with you what to look out for when selecting a tamper evident plastic security seal.

Plastic seals are the most commonly used tamper-evident devices across a broad range of industries and applications, including such everyday uses as securing container trucks, tankers, containers, machinery, cash & jewellery bags, utility meters, and fire extinguishers etc etc.

Here at iSecurity Seals, we are offering an extensive array of seal types and sizes, our friendly experts at iSS want to help you decide on the most effective and appropriate seal for your application. In this post, we take a closer look at several distinct types of plastic seals and their specific features and benefits.

blueAdjustable length seals come in a variety of lengths and strengths, and can be pulled tight to effectively secure objects. These multi-purpose seals are used across a variety of industries, including the transportation, airline, supply chain, logistics, and loss prevention industries. Their adjustability, as well as their extensive print area, makes them a practical solution for a multitude of purposes, including securing trailers, railroad cars, cabinets, ballot boxes, evidence, and valuables-in-transit.

yellowFixed-length seals deter tampering by featuring a highly-visible and secure single locking position at a specified length.  The most common versions of these seals are truck seals, twin tote seals, and padlock seals, which provide an excellent tamper-evident security solution.  Fixed-length seals are especially effective and popular in the transportation, supply chain, logistics, and loss prevention industries, particularly where the print area requirements are minimal.

Fixed-Length vs. Adjustable-Length

Fixed-length seals, whether plastic truck seals, twin tote seals, or padlock seals, are considered more tamper-evident due to their single locking position, which offers a more easily visible check on the integrity of the seal.  Although adjustable seals have excellent tamper-evident features, users must be aware of the need to cinch the seal as tightly as necessary for the particular application to eliminate any circumvention of a loose seal.  In addition, if the adjustable-length seal is not cinched tight, it leaves itself open to someone cutting it off, getting into which is now unsecured, and then reapplying the (now shorter) security seal.

To address this issue, many adjustable seals contain visible indicators that will tell you if a seal has been cut and re-sealed; however, these indicators are usually visible only upon close manual inspection, which is not always part of the receiving protocol.  In the case of a fixed-length seal, the integrity indication is considerably simpler: the seal arrives either locked or un-locked.  Once a fixed-length seal is broken, it cannot be reapplied.

Cable Security seals are mechanisms used to seal important containers, cargo trucks in a way that provides tamper evidence and some level of security. Such seals can help to detect theft or contamination, either accidental or deliberate.

Security seals serve two primary and somewhat related purposes.  They are a trusted and cost-effective solution to deter tampering and theft, and they help provide a sense of security and safety.  The various different seal types are each designed to serve a distinct purpose, and selecting the right seal for your application means understanding each style’s distinguishing factors.

Aside from length and seal type, the tensile or break strength of a seal is an important consideration. A seal securing a first aid kit will most likely require a low break strength to provide the security of a sealed kit while offering quick and easy access. In contrast, a seal used to secure a tanker truck in extreme weather conditions would certainly benefit from a considerably higher break strength.

Plastic security seals have break strengths that range from UL Certified seals most commonly used to secure fire extinguishers, which break at less than 15 pounds, to extremely strong seals that require 150 plus pounds of force to break.  Understanding the desired break strength in your specific application is critical to selecting the most appropriate seal and a key component to a successful security program.

Tamper Evidence Security Seals

Welcome to iSecurity Seals - Your trusted security seals specialist

The Need for Security Seals

In this current day and age, people recognize there is an importance and an acknowledgement for installing antivirus software to help protect us against web attacks such as malware, identity theft and online fraud. Our anti-virus programs are constantly being updated to the highest level of security available and that we conduct virus scans on a frequent basis to give us a ‘piece of mind’ in terms of protections from the vast growing online threats of the future.
In comparison, it may come as a surprise that many companies with a need for supply chain security/protection, do not make an efforts to regularly look into the features of the security seals they choose for their supply chains. This means they are overlooking the benefits or potential risks their seals are adding to their supply chain vulnerability.

What Is A Security Seal?

Security seal features are precisely what distinguishes poorly designed security seals from unique and innovative security seal designs. Tamper resistance- and tamper evidence features serve a real purpose, and they add value.

Why Use Security Seals?

Many seals are being developed to meet specific criteria for different application and other international requirements, but often the requirements for security seals are entirely defined by the application or specific situation in which the security seals are being used.
Within the logistics industry, a very large percentage of tampering of security seals is done, even before the tote box, truck trailer or ocean container departs from its point of loading. Therefore, users of security seals that make a conscious decision to utilize security seals that are specifically designed to provide easy detection of pre tampering, will harvest the benefits of decreased pilferage.
In other words, security seals that provide easy identification of pre- tampering also serve the purpose of being “pilferage deterrent”.
Often, the cost difference between using a poorly designed security seal and a uniquely designed product that adds real value in the supply chain is only a few cents per seal, so a cost-benefit analysis will most likely prove that it pays to choose good security seal designs.
iSecurity Seals' products offer real value to the end users, by providing the highest level of tamper detection.

The Primary Purpose of a Seal.

The two primary purposes of a security seal are to resist tampering and provide proof of tampering.
The important challenge for the security seal industry is to continuously developing products that meet or exceed the requirements of the market while providing unique tamper detection features. Equally important is the challenge for security seal manufacturers to educate the users of security seals. This includes making educated choices on what security seals to use for different applications and situations, how to use them and what procedures should be implemented around the usage of the seals.

Security Seals Best Practices

Welcome to iSecurity Seals - Your trusted security seals specialist

Best Practices to Follow

Security seals are used to as tamper evidence instruments. Security seals exists in various forms and usages, but their usefulness would be negligible if they are not used as an integral part of existing procedures and systems established by users to apply and monitor security seals. Here, the following points are intended to help seal users, assisting them in setting up the proper procedures and control systems, in order to use security seals to prevent pilferage and theft.

  Ordering Security Seals

1.   A company is strongly recommended to designate one staff to handle all seals purchases.

2.   All orders for security seals should come from on centralized location in the company.

3.   Shipment of security seals should be done to one specific location in the company.

4.   Security seals should be stamped with a marking and number series unique to the company that requires the seals.

5.   Color and location differentiation is one suggested method to identify different distribution centers or terminals of companies.

Storing Security Seals

Security seals should always be kept in a secure area where only authorized personnel will have access. This will prevent fraudulent use of security seals. A log book of “seal release” must be kept.

Outbound Security Seal Log Book

Maintain one log book for outbound seal recording and a separate log book for inbound seal recording. The outbound security seal log book should contain the following information:

1. Date and time of seal application.
2. Trailer or container number.
3. Shipment destination.
4. Name of the employee applying the seal.
5. Driver identity or other identification of personnel involved.

If the driver is not an employee of the shipper, the application of the seal should be monitored by a representative of the shipper. Proper handing over procedures should be in place at all stages of the route.

Types of Security Seals

Welcome to iSecurity Seals - Your trusted security seals specialist

Plastic seals are manufactured from a plastic material and are mainly used as an indicator of tampering or unauthorised entry. Mainly designed as Pull-tight seal (variable length seal), Fixed length seal or Padlock Type seal.

  •   Metal band / Metal Clip seals - manufactured from a metal material and are generally used to provide barrier protection.

  •   Bolt seals - offer the highest level of barrier protection and are manufactured in two metal parts that are designed to fit together via a locking mechanism.

  •   Cable seals - consist of a steel cable which is fixed at one end into the locking mechanism of the seal body.

  •   Re-usable Security Seals - consist of a main re-usable body which can be sealed with a single use seal.

  •   Electronic Seals - are typically reusable. Generate a unique time, date and number each time the seal is closed and opened. Register and record all sealing and opening events.

  •   Tamper Evident Labels - can be physically stuck to a surface and give the user the option of leaving a residue, disintegrating, and/or displaying an indication of attempted removal or tampering.

The following factors determine the choice of the appropriate seal for a particular role:

1.    What type of unit (bar trolley, container, bag, vehicle, door, tote box, ATM cassette, electricity meter etc.) is to be sealed?
2.    Under what ambient temperature conditions will the seals be used?
3.    How long will the security seal be fixed on the sealed unit?
4.    Are you looking for an easy removable seal or a barrier seal?
5.    For how long will the sealed unit be left unsupervised?
6.    How valuable are contents?
7.    Which type of number system is required for the application (sequential or random)?
8.    Must the serial number be electronically readable? Which type of barcode?
9.    What are the logistical requirements? (are various colours required?)

Our experienced team provides expert advice to suit your individual applications and requirements.
